Rhythm-Action Game
This project aims to create a new subgenre of games that merges the fighting and rhythm game genres. My intent for this project was also to challenge my skills in game development such that I could learn more about it. I aimed high from the start of the semester, but needed to rework my plan in terms of finding alternatives to the elements that I was adamant about having in the project, and discerning which elements would detract from the overall experience. My other intent for this project was to make it comprehensive with my IDM coursework, such that I would be implementing a number of technical skills and ideas that I have learned throughout the program. The project was programmed and compiled in GameMaker Studio 2, however the rhythm maps were created using a beat detection algorithm scripted with Processing3. Character sprites were animated by hand.

Objective: this game is played much like a traditional 2D fighting game, however, rather than attacking your opponent to drain their healthbar, the healthbar has been removed and your attacks are based on the rhythm of the song you are listening to.

This game is meant to be played by two people locally. 
Earphones are required there are two different songs being played simultaneously into either earphone.


How to Play:

Red Character
Listens to music through LEFT earphone

  • WASD to move, jump, and crouch
  • J = punch 1
  • U = punch 2
  • K = kick 1
  • I = kick 2

Move

Blue Character
Listens to music through RIGHT earphone

  • ARROW KEYS to move, jump, and crouch
  • numpad 1 = punch 1
  • numpad 2 = punch 2
  • numpad 3 = kick 1
  • numpad 4 = kick 2
